March milk production up 2.4%

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 15.8 billion lbs in March, up 2.4% from March 2010, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report.

Milk production for February was revised to 14 billion lbs, up 2.3% from February 2010 but down 14 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate.

Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,872 lbs in March, up 24 lbs from the March 2010 average. There were 8.42 million dairy cows on farms during the month, which was 93,000 head more than in March 2010 and 17,000 head more than in February 2011.

Milk production for the January – March period was 48.4 billion lbs, up 2.2% from the same period of the previous year. During the quarter there were 9.16 million dairy cows on farms, 70,000 head more than during the same period of the previous year.
