April milk production up 1.7%

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 15.5 billion lbs in April, up 1.7% from April 2010, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report.
Milk production for March was revised to 15.8 billion lbs, up 2.4% from March 2010 but down 6 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate.
Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,834 lbs in April, up 9 lbs from April 2010. There were 8.43 million dairy cows on farms during the month, which was 97,000 head more than in April 2010 and 8,000 head more than in March 2011.
