May milk production up 1.5%

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 16 billion lbs in May, up 1.5% from May 2010, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report.
Milk production for April was revised to 15.5 billion lbs, up 1.7% from April 2010 and an increase of 3 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate.
Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,899 lbs in May, up 6 lbs from May 2010. There were 8.45 million dairy cows on farms during the month, which was 103,000 head more than in May 2010 and 15,000 head more than in April 2011.
