June milk production up 1.4%

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 15.4 billion lbs in June, up 1.4% from June 2010, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report.

Milk production for May was revised to 16.1 billion lbs, up 1.6% from May 2010 and an increase of 20 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate.

Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,819 lbs in June, up 2 lbs from June 2010. There were 8.46 million dairy cows on farms during the month, which was 106,000 head more than in June 2010 and 11,000 head more than in May 2011.

April–June milk production totaled 50.4 billion lbs, up 1.3% from the same quarter of the previous year. There was an average of 9.2 million dairy cows on farms during the quarter, up 79,000 head from the same period of the previous year. Milk production for the first six months of 2011 totaled 98.860 billion lbs, up 1.7% from the first half of 2010.
