Butter, turkey, red meat stocks up from 2011

WASHINGTON — Butter, turkey, red meat and fruit stocks on Jan. 31, 2012, were higher than year-earlier levels, but cheese, chicken and vegetable stocks were lower, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Cold Storage report.

Frozen turkey stocks totaled 297,632,000 lbs, up 41% from December and up 17% from January 2011, the U.S.D.A. said. Total chicken stocks were 609,776,000 lbs, down 3% from December and down 21% from a year ago. Total frozen poultry stocks were 909,927,000 lbs, up 8% from December but down 11% from January 2011.

Natural cheese stocks on Jan. 31 were 977,835,000 lbs, down 1% from December and down 7% from January 2011. Butter stocks totaled 171,183,000 lbs, up 60% from December and up 44% from a year earlier.

Frozen red meat supplies were 1,088,859,000 lbs, up 13% from December and up 7% from January 2011. Frozen pork stocks totaled 584,431,000 lbs, up 21% from December and up 8% from January 2011. Frozen pork belly stocks were 53,667,000 lbs, up 29% from December and up 5% from January 2011. Beef stocks in freezers totaled 482,070,000 lbs, up 5% from December and up 4% from January 2011.

Total frozen egg stocks on Jan. 31 were 37,433,000, up 3% from December and up 40% from January 2011. Stocks of egg whites were 4,180,000 lbs, up 29% from December and up 10% from January 2011. Frozen egg yolk stocks were 2,180,000 lbs, up 11% from December and up 88% from January 2011. Whole and mixed egg stocks were 11,303,000 lbs, up 10% from December and up 44% from January 2011. Unclassified egg stocks were 19,770,000 lbs, down 6% from December but up 41% from January 2011.

Stocks of frozen orange juice concentrate on Jan. 31, 2012, were 710,350,000 lbs, up 12% from December but down 15% from January 2011. Stocks of all types of frozen fruit on Jan. 31 were 1,080,069,000 lbs, down 9% from December but up 2% from January 2011.

Stocks of frozen french fries were 837,076,000 lbs, up 4% from December but down 5% from January 2011. Total frozen vegetable stocks (excluding potatoes) on Jan. 31 were 2,111,415,000 lbs, down 8% from December and down slightly from 2,117,008,000 lbs in January 2011, the U.S.D.A. said.
