February milk production up 8.3%

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 15.2 billion lbs in February, up 8.3% from February 2011, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report.

Yet when considering the extra day for leap year in 2012, February milk production was up 4.6% on a per day basis, the U.S.D.A. said.

Milk production for January was revised to 15.8 billion lbs, up 4% from January 2011 and an increase of 24 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate.

Production per cow in the 23 major producing states averaged 1,782 lbs in February, up 117 lbs from February 2011. There were 8.51 million dairy cows on farms during the month, 102,000 head more than in February 2011.
