March milk production up 4.3%

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 16.5 billion lbs in March, up 4.3% from March 2011, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report.

Milk production for February was revised to 15.1 billion lbs, up 8.2% from February 2011 but down 13 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate. February 2012 had one extra day due to leap year, and production on a per-day basis was up 4.5% from 2011, the U.S.D.A. said.

March production per cow in the 23 major producing states averaged 1,931 lbs, up 59 lbs from March 2011. There were 8.52 million dairy cows on farms during the month, 94,000 head more than in March 2011 and 9,000 more than February 2012.
