Butter, turkey, red meat stocks up from May 2011

WASHINGTON — Butter, turkey, fruit, vegetable and red meat stocks on May 31, 2012, were higher than year-earlier levels, but chicken and cheese stocks were lower, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Cold Storage report.

Frozen turkey stocks totaled 500,035,000 lbs, up 14% from April and up 12% from May 2011, the U.S.D.A. said. Total chicken stocks were 646,841,000 lbs, up 8% from April but down 15% from a year earlier. Total frozen poultry stocks were 1,151,126,000 lbs, up 10% from April but down 5% from May 2011.

Natural cheese stocks on May 31 were 1,028,800,000 lbs, down slightly from 1,029,188,000 lbs in April and down 2% from May 2011. Butter stocks totaled 264,326,000 lbs, up 4% from April and up 55% from May 2011.

Frozen red meat supplies were 1,158,416,000 lbs, down 4% from April but up 14% from May 2011.

Frozen pork stocks totaled 636,084,000 lbs, down 4% from April but up 16% from May 2011. Frozen pork belly stocks were 65,303,000 lbs, down 13% from April but up 14% from May 2011. Beef stocks in freezers totaled 498,607,000 lbs, down 4% from April but up 11% from a year earlier.

Total frozen egg stocks on May 31 were 34,453,000 lbs, up 6% from April and up 19% from May 2011. Stocks of egg whites were 3,098,000 lbs, down 9% from April but up 35% from May 2011. Frozen egg yolk stocks were 2,466,000 lbs, down 8% from April but up 24% from May 2011. Whole and mixed egg stocks were 10,277,000 lbs, up 6% from April and up 63% from May 2011. Unclassified egg stocks were 18,612,000 lbs, up 11% from April and up 1% from May 2011.

Stocks of frozen orange juice concentrate on May 31, 2012, were 1,057,704,000 lbs, up 5% from April and up 22% from May 2011. Stocks of all types of frozen fruit on May 31 were 835,304,000 lbs, up 3% from April and up 11% from May 2011.

Stocks of frozen french fries were 844,523,000 lbs, down 5% from April and down slightly from 847,211,000 lbs in May 2011. Total vegetable stocks (excluding potatoes) on May 31 were 1,524,658,000 lbs, down 7% from April but up 1% from May 2011, the U.S.D.A. said.
