April dry milk production up from year ago

WASHINGTON — April production of both nonfat dry milk and skim milk powders was up from a year ago, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Dairy Products report (click here to read report).

Nonfat dry milk production in April was 132,546,000 lbs, up 8% from April 2007, and output of skim milk powders was 36,137,000 lbs, up 132%.

Total dry whey production was 96,962,000 lbs, up slightly from last year’s levels. Production of lactose was 63,354,000 lbs, also nearly equal to last year’s levels, and total whey protein concentrate production was 34,848,000 lbs, up 5% from April 2007, the U.S.D.A. said. Dry buttermilk outturn was 6,720,000 lbs, down 3% from a year ago.

Stocks of nonfat dry milk at the end of April were 135,619,000 lbs, up 46% from a year earlier. Shipments of nonfat dry milk in April totaled 143,178,000 lbs, up 33% from April 2007.

Total manufacturers’ stocks of dry whey on April 30 were 62,556,000 lbs, up 33% from a year ago and included 59,906,000 lbs of dry whey for human use, up 38%, and 2,650,000 lbs for animal use, down 26%. Whey protein concentrate stocks totaled 40,607,000 lbs, up 60% from a year ago. Total lactose stocks were 78,483,000 lbs, up 95% from a year ago. Stocks of dry buttermilk were 9,229,000 lbs, up 35% from last year.

Butter production in April was 153 million lbs, which was 15% above April 2007 and 1% above March 2008.

Cheese production in April totaled 815 million lbs, 1% above a year ago but 2% below March 2008.

Production of regular hard ice cream in April was 75 million gallons, down 8% from the previous year. Low-fat ice cream production was 37 million gallons, up 5% from April 2007.
