April milk outturn up 2.5% from year ago

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 14.8 billion lbs in April, up 2.5% from the same month of 2007, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report (click here to read report).

Production per cow in the 23 major producing states averaged 1,757 lbs in April, which was 12 lbs more than in April 2007. Additionally, there were 8.44 million milk cows on farms in the 23 states, which was a 152,000-head increase from April 2007 and an 8,000-head increase from March 2008.

Milk production for March was revised to 15.1 billion lbs, up 2.3% from March 2007 but down slightly from the initial estimate.
