August milk outturn up 1.5% from year ago

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 14.5 billion lbs in August, up 1.5% from the same month of 2007, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report (click here to read report).

Production per cow in the 23 major producing states averaged 1,717 lbs in August, 2 lbs below August 2007. Additionally, there were 8.47 million cows on farms in the 23 states, which was 137,000 more than August 2007 but a 3,000-head decrease from July 2008.

Milk production for July was revised to 14.8 billion lbs, up 1.8% from July 2007 and an increase of 12 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate.
