Average price of all wheat at $5.91 in December

WASHINGTON — The preliminary national average price received by farmers for all wheat in December was $5.91 per bu, down 37c from $6.28 in November and down $1.80 from the December 2007 average of $7.71, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Agricultural Prices report.

The national average price received for winter wheat in December was $5.06 a bu, down 58c from $5.64 in November and down $2.64 from $7.70 in December 2007.

The average price for durum was $8.52 a bu, down 16c from $8.68 in November and down $2.98 from $11.50 in December 2007.

The average price for spring wheat other than durum was $6.65, down 47c from $7.12 in November and down 74c from $7.39 in December 2007.

The average price received for rough rice was $18 a cwt, up 30c from November and up $6.50 from $11.50 in a year ago.

The preliminary index of prices received for food grains was 209% of the 1990-92 base of 100, down 5.4% from the revised November index of 221 and 14% below the December 2007 index of 244.

The December index for feed grains was 177, down 5.3% from a revised 187 the previous month but 6.6% above the December 2007 index of 166. The average price paid to farmers for corn in December was $4.05 per bu, down 21c from $4.26 in November but up 28c from $3.77 in December 2007. Farmers received an average of $5.26 per cwt for gain sorghum in December, down $1.31 from $6.57 in November and down $1.66 from $6.92 in December 2007. The average price paid for oats in December was $2.40 per bu, down 59c from $2.99 in November and down 29c from $2.69 in December 2007.

The U.S.D.A. index for December prices received for oil-bearing crops was 167, down 3.5% from a revised 173 in November and down 5.6% from 177 in December 2007. The national average price paid to farmers for soybeans was $8.97 per bu, down 41c from $9.38 in November and down $1.03 from $10 in December 2007.

The December index for dairy products was 122, down 6.9% from a revised 131 in November and down 26% from 165 in December 2007. The average price paid for manufacturing grade milk in December was $15.90 per cwt, down 70c from $16.60 in November and down $4.90 from $20.80 a year earlier.

The egg and poultry index was 148 in December, down 0.7% from a revised 149 in November but up 2.1% from 145 in December 2007. The average price paid to farmers for all eggs was $1 per dozen, down 3c from $1.03 in November and down 36c from $1.36 in December 2007.
