Average price of all wheat drops 50c a bu in April

WASHINGTON — The preliminary national average price received by farmers for all wheat in April was $10.10 per bu, down 50c from $10.60 in March but $5.21 above the April 2007 average of $4.89, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its April Agricultural Prices report (click here to read report).

The national average price received for winter wheat in April was $9.26 per bu, down 74c from $10 in March but $4.39 above the April 2007 average of $4.87.

The average price for durum was $12.60 a bu, down $2.80 from $15.40 in March but $7.14 above the April 2007 average of $5.46.

The price for spring wheat other than durum was $10.90 a bu, down 10c from $11 in March but $6.03 above the April 2007 average of $4.87.

The average price received for rough rice was $14.80 per cwt in April, up $1.20 from $13.60 in March and $4.60 above the April 2007 average of $10.20.

The preliminary index of prices received for food grains in April was 302% of the 1990-92 base of 100, down 2.3% from the revised March index of 309 but up 90% from 159 in April 2007.

The April index for feed grains was 219, up 9% from a revised 201 the previous month and 45% above the April 2007 index of 151. The average price paid by farmers for corn in April was $5.13 per bu, up 43c from $4.70 in March and up $1.74 from $3.39 in April 2007. Farmers received an average of $9.50 per cwt for grain sorghum in April, up 46c from $9.04 in March and $3.53 above $5.97 in April 2007. The average price paid for oats in April was $3.59 a bu, up 15c from $3.44 in March and $1.13 above $2.46 in April 2007.

The U.S.D.A. index for April prices received for oil-bearing crops was 212, up 2.4% from a revised 207 in March and 71% above 124 in April 2007. The national average price paid to farmers for soybeans was $11.80 per bu, up 30c from $11.50 in March and $4.92 above $6.88 in April 2007.

The April index for dairy products was 138, down 0.7% from a revised 139 in March but up 8.7% from 127 a year ago. The average price paid for manufacturing grade milk in April was $17.60 per cwt, down 70c from $18.30 in March but up $1.70 from $15.90 in April 2007.

The poultry and egg index was 146 in April, down 8.2% from a revised 159 in March but 6.6% above 137 a year ago. The average price paid to farmers for all eggs was $1.03 per dozen in April, down 35c from $1.38 in March but up 30c from 73c in April 2007.
