Commercial red meat production soars to high in April

WASHINGTON — Commercial red meat production in April was a record high 4,297 million lbs, up 14% from 3,753 million lbs in April 2007 and up 5% from a revised 4,091 million lbs in March 2008, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Livestock Slaughter report (click here to read report).

Beef production was 2,255 million lbs in April, up 12% from 2,015 million lbs in April 2007 and up 7% from a revised 2,100 million lbs in March 2008.

Pork production was 2,015 million lbs, up 18% from 1,712 million lbs in April 2007 and up 3% from 1,963 million lbs in March 2008.

Total commercial red meat production for the January-April period was 16,771 million lbs, up 8% from 15,475 million lbs during the same period of the previous year.
