Commercial red meat production to record high in Sept.

WASHINGTON — Commercial red meat production in September was a record high at 4,270.4 million lbs, up 11% from 3,863.6 million in September 2007 and up 4% from 4,097.4 million lbs in August 2008, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Livestock Slaughter report (click here to read report).

Beef production was 2,269.8 million lbs in September, roughly equal to levels in August but up 8% from 2,094.7 million lbs in September 2007.

Pork production was 1,973.5 million lbs, up 9% from 1,804.4 million lbs in August and up 13% from 1,746 million lbs in September 2007.

Total commercial and red meat production for the January-September period was 37,662.5 million lbs, up 5% from 35,707.6 million lbs during the same period of the previous year.
