COPENHAGEN, DENMARK — Record-high yields from sugar beet fields pushed sugar production at Danisco A/S above 1 million tonnes in 2007-08. At 1,069,000 tonnes, the company’s sugar production in Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Germany and Lithuania finished ahead of Danisco’s total E.U. quota of 973,000 tonnes in 2006-07.
"Favorable weather conditions gave us the best possible start to the growing season and have contributed to a record-high sugar yield in several of our production countries," said Thomas B. Olsen, executive vice-president. "However, growing conditions were not optimal during the summer and autumn, which is the reason for the local variations in yields."
Mr. Olsen also noted the higher yield levels reflect "extensive efficiency improvements" made within beet growing in Danisco’s region of operations during the past few years.
