December frozen meat, poultry stocks up from '07

WASHINGTON — Total frozen red meat stocks on Dec. 31 were up 10% from a year ago while frozen poultry supplies were up 16%, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Cold Storage report.
Red meat stocks in freezers on Dec. 31 totaled 1,061 million lbs, up 10% from a year earlier, the U.S.D.A. said. Supplies of frozen beef totaled 482 million lbs, about even with the year-ago level. Frozen pork stocks were 549 million lbs, up 20% from a year ago. Stocks of frozen pork bellies were 52 million lbs, down 6% from 2007.
Frozen poultry stocks totaled 1,164 million lbs, up 16% from Dec. 31, 2007. Total frozen chicken stocks were 764 million lbs, up 3% from a year ago. Turkey stocks were 398 million lbs, up 53%.
Stocks of frozen eggs on Dec. 31 totaled 23 million lbs, up 55% from a year earlier. Frozen white stocks were up 3%, yolks down 8%, whole and mixed up 63% and unclassified up 97% from a year ago.
Butter stocks on Dec. 31 totaled 119 million lbs, down 23% from a year ago. Total cheese stocks were 847 million lbs, up 6% from the previous year.
Stocks of frozen concentrated orange juice were 1,089 million lbs, up 60% from a year ago. Total frozen stocks of fruit were 1,244 million lbs, about even with the year-earlier total.
Stocks of fresh apples in temperature controlled warehouses totaled 5,248 million lbs, up 12% from a year ago. Fresh pears in cold storage totaled 287 million lbs on Dec. 31, down 12% from a year ago.
Frozen french fry stocks were 873 million lbs, up 6% from a year ago. Total frozen vegetable stocks (excluding potatoes) were 2,352 million lbs, also up 6% from Dec. 31, 2007.
