February nonfat dry milk production up from year ago

WASHINGTON — February production of both nonfat dry milk and skim milk powders was up significantly from a year ago, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Dairy Products report (click here to read report).
Nonfat dry milk production in February was 120 million lbs, up 22% from February 2007, and output of skim milk powders was 33.8 million lbs, up 206%.
Total dry whey production was 88 million lbs, down 3% from last year. Production of lactose for human and animal consumption was 60.4 million lbs, up 1%, and total whey protein concentrate production was 33.2 million lbs, up 13% from February 2007, the U.S.D.A. said. Dry buttermilk outturn was 5.8 million lbs in February, down 20% from a year ago.
Butter production in February was 147 million lbs, which was 9% above February 2007 but 13% below January 2008.
Cheese production in February totaled 784 million lbs, 5% above a year ago but 4% below January 2008.
Production of regular hard ice cream in February was 66 million gallons, up 1% from the previous year. Low-fat ice cream production was 28 million gallons, down slightly from February 2007.
Total manufacturers’ stocks of dry whey on Feb. 29 were 58,933,000 lbs, up 50% from a year ago and included 56,565,000 lbs of dry whey for human use, up 51%, and 2,368,000 lbs for animal use, up 41%.
Whey protein concentrate stocks totaled 31,765,000 lbs, up 26% from a year ago. Total lactose stocks were 72,007,000 lbs, up 78% from a year ago, the U.S.D.A. said.
