January milk outturn up 2.4% from year ago

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 14.6 billion lbs in January, up 2.4% from the same month of 2007, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report (click here to read report).

Production per cow in the 23 major producing states averaged 1,743 lbs for January, which was 17 lbs more than in January 2007. Additionally, there were 8.4 million milk cows on farms in the 23 states, which was a 120,000-head increase from January 2007 and a 15,000-head increase from December 2007.

Milk production for December was unrevised at 14.4 billion lbs, up 2.8% from December 2006.

Total U.S. milk production in 2007 was 186 billion lbs, up 2.1% from 2006, the U.S.D.A. said.
