July milk outturn up 1.7% from year ago

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 14.8 billion lbs in July, up 1.7% from the same month of 2007, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report (click here to read report).
Production per cow in the 23 major producing states averaged 1,742 lbs in July, unchanged from July 2007. Additionally, there were 8.47 million milk cows on farms in the 23 states, which was a 143,000-head increase from July 2007 and a 5,000-head increase from June 2008.
Milk production for June was revised to 14.7 billion lbs, up 3.2% from June 2007 and a decrease of 19 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate.
