June dry milk production up from year ago

WASHINGTON — June production of both nonfat dry milk and skim milk powders were up from a year ago, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Dairy Products report (click here to read report).

Nonfat dry milk production in June was 132,206,000 lbs, up 12% from June 2007, and output of skim milk powders was 33,873,000 lbs, up 106%.

Total dry whey production was 92,508,000 lbs, down 2% from last year’s levels. Production of lactose was 63,079,000 lbs, up slightly from last year, and total whey protein concentrate production was 34,274,000 lbs, up 4% from June 2007, the U.S.D.A. said. Dry buttermilk outturn was 5,527,000 lbs, down 12% from a year ago.

Manufacturers’ shipments of nonfat dry milk for human consumption in June were 132,814,000 lbs, up 24% from June 2007, the U.S.D.A. said. End-of-June stocks were 126,730,000 lbs, up 22% from a year ago.

Total manufacturers’ stocks of dry whey on June 30 were 62,568,000 lbs, up 23% from a year ago, and included 57,452,000 lbs for human use, up 26%, and 5,116,000 lbs for animal use, down 8%. Whey protein concentrate stocks totaled 43,026,000 lbs, up 58% from a year ago. Total lactose stocks were 83,810,000 lbs, up 86% from a year ago. Dry buttermilk stocks at the end of June were 9,814,000 lbs, up 30% from last year.

Butter production in June was 119,840,000 lbs, up 9% from June 2007 but down 16% from May 2008.

Cheese production in June totaled 803,263,000 lbs, up 1% from a year ago but down 3% from May 2008.

Production of regular hard ice cream in June was 89,993,000 gallons, up 3% from the previous year. Low-fat ice cream production was 43,351,000 gallons, up 7% from June 2007.
