May egg product output down 6% from 2008

WASHINGTON — The total amount of liquid product from shell eggs broken in May was 219,884,000 lbs, up 1% from April but down 6% from the previous year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Egg Products report.
May production of edible whole eggs was 137,313,000 lbs, down 6% from the previous year; liquid whites were 54,784,000 lbs, down 4%; liquid yolks were 27,787,000 lbs, down 9%; and inedible products were 18,512,000 lbs, down 5%.
Edible liquid product produced for the January–May period was 1,054,994,000 lbs, down 4% from the same period of the previous year, the U.S.D.A. said. Liquid whole eggs totaled 670,969,000 lbs, down 5%; liquid whites were 253,525,000 lbs, down 2%; liquid yolks were 130,500,000 lbs, down 6%; and inedible products were 89,792,000 lbs, down 8%.
Shell eggs broken in May totaled 168,729,000 dozen, down 5% from the previous year but up 2% from April 2009. Shell eggs broken in the January–May period totaled 805,730,000 dozen, down 4% from the same period of the previous year.
