May egg product output up 1% from 2007

WASHINGTON — The total amount of edible liquid product from shell eggs broken in May was 234,482,000 lbs, up 1% from a year ago and from April 2008, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Egg Products report (click here to read report).

May production of edible whole liquid eggs was 146,696,000 lbs, equal to the year-ago level; liquid whites were 57,161,000 lbs, up 3%; and liquid yolks were 30,625,000 lbs, also up 3%.

Inedible product from shell eggs broken in May totaled 19,509,000 lbs, down 4% from May 2007.

Shell eggs broken in May totaled 177,995,000 dozen, up 1% from May 2007 and April 2008, the U.S.D.A. said.

Edible liquid product produced in the January-May period totaled 1,101,561,000 lbs, up 3% from the same period of the previous year, the U.S.D.A. said. Liquid whole eggs totaled 704,474,000 lbs, up 4% from a year ago; liquid whites were 258,601,000 lbs, up 3%; liquid yolks were 138,486,000, up 2%; and inedible products were 97,111,000, up 2%.

Shell eggs broken in the January – May period totaled 841,377,000 dozen, up 4% from a year ago.
