November milk outturn up 1.4% from year ago

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 14 billion lbs in November, up 1.4% from the same month of 2007, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report (click here to read report).

In November, production per cow in the 23 major producing states averaged 1,657 lbs, which was 3 lbs above November 2007. Additionally, there were 8.47 million cows on farms in the 23 states, which was 99,000 heads more than November 2007 and 6,000 head more than October 2008.

Milk production for October was revised to 14.4 billion lbs, up 1.6% from October 2007 and an increase of 16 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate.
