October milk outturn up 1.5% from year ago

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 14.4 billion lbs in October, up 1.5% from the same month of 2007, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report (click here to read report).

In October, production per cow in the 23 major producing states averaged 1,700 lbs, which was 3 lbs above October 2007. Additionally, there were 8.46 million cows on farms in the 23 states, which was 105,000 heads more than October 2007 and 1,000 head more than September 2008.

Milk production for September was revised to 14 billion lbs, up 1.8% from September 2007 and a decrease of 13 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate.
