October red meat production down 2% from year ago

WASHINGTON — Commercial red meat production in October totaled 4,531 million lbs, down 2% from 4,616 million lbs in October 2007 but up 6% from 4,273 million lbs in September 2008, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Livestock Slaughter report (click here to read report).

Beef production was 2,342 million lbs, down 4% from 2,443 million lbs in October 2007 but up 3% from 2,270 million lbs in September 2008.

Pork production was 2,161 million lbs, up 1% from 2,145 million lbs in October 2007 and up 9% from a revised 1,976 million lbs in September 2008.

Total commercial red meat production for the January-October period was 42,196 million lbs, up 5% from 40,324 million lbs during the same period last year.
