Whole wheat, white pan bread prices post sharp gains

WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread rose 4c per lb in February, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. This followed a narrow gain of 0.1c per lb in January. The price of whole wheat bread also moved up sharply, climbing 7.2c per lb to a record 188.4c.
The national average retail price of white pan bread was 132.1c, according to the B.L.S. The February price for white pan bread increased 15.3c compared with February 2007. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread rose in all four regions — Northeast, up 7.5c, West, up 4.4c, South, up 3.2c, and Midwest, up 3c.
At 188.4c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was up 24.4c year-over-year.
The national average price of family flour in February was 45.5c per lb, up 3.4c from January and up 9.9c from February 2007.
The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in February was 110.4c per lb, up 8.7c from January and up 20.9c from February 2007. Chocolate chip cookies were 268.2c per lb, up 4c from January and up 3.7c from February 2007.
