Frito-Lay to claim heart benefits of unsaturated fats

WASHINGTON — According the Food and Drug Administration, Frito-Lay Inc. is going to begin introducing labeling stating that items containing unsaturated fatty acids in place of saturated fats may lead to a reduced-risk of heart disease.

Frito-Lay will apply the claim to vegetable oils, spreads and shortenings that have a total unsaturated content of 80% or more of total fat. The company also is proposing posting the claim to crackers, salad dressings, salads, sauces, dips, and grain, vegetable and fruit-based snacks.

Frito-Lay submitted a notification to the F.D.A. regarding the use of the proposed claim in January, and the 120-day waiting period after the submission of the letter was May 24.

According to the F.D.A., the proposed language for the claim is: "Replacing saturated fat with similar amounts of unsaturated fats may reduce the risk of heart disease. To achieve this benefit, total daily calories should not increase."
