Besides digestion, prebiotic fibers can help out calcium absorption. A recent study conducted for GTC Nutrition examined how much consumers really know about calcium and found them to be generally uninformed. Based at Golden, CO, GTC Nutrition markets NutraFlora short-chain fructo-oligiosaccharide (FOS) prebiotic dietary fiber.
More than two-thirds of the 1,031 survey respondents were not aware of a calcium shortfall among girls aged 12 to 19, which shows 90% of them are not getting enough calcium.
Also, more than half of the respondents were unaware the body absorbs only about 30% of the calcium consumed through diet.
Conducted by Opinion Research Corp, the study found 86% of Americans believe women are at greater risk from breast, ovarian or uterine cancer than from fractures linked to osteoporosis, even though a woman’s risk of an osteoporotic fracture is greater than from all three cancers combined.
