PepsiCo to join N.C. research campus

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — PepsiCo, Inc. announced it will establish a presence at the North Carolina Research Campus. The vision of David Murdock, chairman and owner of Dole Foods Inc., the campus is located on 350 acres in Kannapolis and is designed to be a world class center for industry and academic research for human health and nutrition.

For its part, PepsiCo Inc. will establish a 4,000-square-foot lab at the David H. Murdock Core Laboratory Building in four to five months.

"Through our partnership with the North Carolina Research Campus, we’re confident that the collaborative research of some of the world’s leading nutrition academic researchers and PepsiCo scientists will result in further advancement in nutrition and health and ultimately the best products for consumers," said Mehmood Khan, chief scientific officer at PepsiCo.

In addition to PepsiCo, other companies with a presence on the campus include Dole Food Inc., LabCorp, PPD Inc., and Sensory Spectrum. The campus also will feature the research capabilities of nine universities and colleges in North Carolina.

The campus held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 20. At the ceremony, Mr. Murdock said he already has invested $400 million in the campus with total cost expected to reach $1.5 billion. Buildings that opened Oct. 20 were the David H. Murdock Core Laboratory Building, the U.N.C. Nutrition Research Building and the N.C. State Fruit and Vegetable Science Institute Building.
