Study: Almonds beneficial for elevated cholesterol

WASHINGTON — Eating almonds may significantly decrease levels of biomarkers for oxidative stress in people with elevated cholesterol, according to a study by the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Almond Board of California and the Canada Research Chair Endowment.
The research found such stress levels to be reduced significantly in volunteers who ate 73 grams of almonds a day. The oxidative stress levels include plasma malondialdehyde, which was decreased by 19% in study participants eating 73 grams of almonds, and urinary isoprostanes, which was decreased by 27% among such participants.
The study consisted of 27 volunteers with elevated cholesterol. The A.R.S. said while the study helps show the antioxidant benefit of eating almonds, there does need to be more research to determine individual contributions of vitamin E and other components found in almonds over tree nuts. The study also did not determine a minimum amount of almonds necessary to produce a positive effect.
