KANSAS CITY — Plant-based dairy alternative products are permeating new product launches as consumers increasingly seek products sourced from flora instead of fauna.

By 2020, global sales of plant-based dairy alternatives are forecast to reach $19.5 billion, said Michele Simon, executive director of the Plant Based Foods Association. C.P.G. manufacturers are aiming to grab a slice of those sales by introducing their own plant-based innovation.

Halo Top Creamery is launching a line of non-dairy and vegan-friendly frozen dessert varieties made with coconut milk. Ranging from 280 to 360 calories per pint, the plant-based desserts come in seven flavors: Peanut butter cup, chocolate, oatmeal cookie, sea salt caramel, caramel macchiato, cinnamon roll and chocolate covered banana.

“The No. 1 request that we get from our fans is to make a non-dairy and vegan-friendly version of Halo Top,” said Justin Woolverton, founder and chief executive officer of Halo Top. “Whether you have to or choose to restrict dairy — or only eat vegan — we always want to make sure we listen to our fans. It took a long time to ‘get it right,’ but we’re absolutely thrilled with the outcome and can’t wait for our fans to try these flavors.”

The Campbell Soup Co.’s Bolthouse Farms brand is introducing Bolthouse Farms Plant Protein Milk. Refrigerated and non-dairy, the milk contains 10 grams of pea protein per 8-oz serving, is vegan and non-G.M.O. and offers a “creamy consistency and clean flavor,” the company said.

“Current alternative milk options don’t address the needs of more than 40% of people seeking great tasting, nutrient rich, allergy-free options,” said Suzanne Ginestro, chief marketing and innovation officer for Campbell’s C-Fresh unit. “Our Plant Protein Milk was created to satisfy the growing number of consumers seeking plant-based proteins, as well as traditional dairy milk drinkers looking for better food choices that are also rich in calcium.”

DanoneWave’s So Delicious Dairy Free brand is debuting dairy-free cheese alternative shreds made with organic coconut milk. So Delicious Shreds are dairy-free, gluten-free, soy-free, vegan, Non-GMO Project verified and available in three varieties: Mozzarella, cheddar and cheddar jack.

“Before Califia, retailers were generally limited to artificially-flavored, sugar and corn-syrup-laden non-dairy creamers – ingredients that have little appeal for today’s health-conscious, millennial-minded consumers,” said Greg Steltenpohl, chief executive officer of Califia Farms. “Our seasonal creamers put a new twist on old-fashioned holiday favorites, but with the added benefit of being great-tasting, dairy-free and clean label.”

Pacific Foods is adding Cashew Non-Dairy to its portfolio of shelf-stable dairy alternatives.
