BOULDER, COLO. — Sunrise Strategic Partners, an accelerator of emerging brands founded by the former chief executive officer and founder of Boulder Brands, has invested in premium ice cream company Coolhaus. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Based in Los Angeles, Calif., Coolhaus was launched by co-founders Natasha Case and Freya Estreller in 2009 as a food truck at the Coachella Valley Music Festival. Since then, Coolhaus has expanded distribution of its products to more than 6,000 stores, including Whole Foods Market, Hy-Vee, Price Chopper, Albertsons and Tom Thumb locations.
The company said it will use the funding to further expand its grocery distribution, launch new products and invest in marketing and sales.
"Natasha's story of starting Coolhaus is one of the most creative entrepreneurial feats I have encountered in my career,” said Steve Hughes, c.e.o. and co-founder of Sunrise Strategic Partners. “Her passion has created a unique and impressive brand that brings innovative flavors and formats to the ice cream category and is celebrated by loyal consumers across the country. Sunrise is proud to partner with a woman-led business, and we are excited to work with Natasha and her team to continue growing the Coolhaus business in the years ahead."
Coolhaus offers a range of ice cream pints in flavors including Milkshake & Fries, featuring salted Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream with shoestring french fries and milk chocolate malt balls; Street Cart Churro Dough, which has brown butter ice cream with cinnamon sugar churro dough and a chocolate chip swirl; and Buttered French Toast, which includes buttered brown sugar ice cream with pecan pralines, cakey toast pieces and maple swirl.
The Coolhaus portfolio also includes ice cream bars in such flavors as chocolate hazelnut almond and Coffee & Cookies, and ice cream sandwiches in varieties including brown butter candied bacon, birthday cake and salted chocolate.
"Coolhaus has seen strong growth and impressive brand loyalty since launching in 2009,” said Ms. Case, who is the c.e.o. of Coolhaus. “We're a brand that stays true to who we are, creating high quality ice cream in inventive flavors that appeal to a younger generation. With our continued innovation in super-premium flavors, our new vegan line and a brand new novelty concept, we have lots on the dashboard to propel our growth. I'm looking forward to leveraging the Sunrise team's expertise as we continue to expand."
The investment in Coolhaus is the 10th for Sunrise Strategic Partners since launching in 2016. The company's portfolio includes Little Secrets, Kill Cliff, Kodiak Cakes, Maple Hill Creamery, Pact Organic, Perky Jerky, Teton Waters Ranch and Vital Farms.
