YORK, MAINE — Specialty food manufacturer Stonewall Kitchen has entered into an agreement to acquire the Vermont Village brand of organic applesauce and apple cider vinegar products. Financial terms of the transaction, which is expected to close in September, were not disclosed.
Based in Barre, Vt., Vermont Village operates three facilities and employs about 35. The company’s apple cider vinegar, apple cider vinegar shots, functional vinegars, malt vinegar, apple sauces and apple butter are sold in more than 13,000 stores nationwide.
“We can’t think of a better addition to our family of brands,” said John Stiker, chief executive officer of Stonewall Kitchen. “We have greatly admired the Vermont Village brand and its superior quality applesauce and vinegar products, a line that is complementary to our current offerings of premium specialty foods. Both brands share similar values of an authentic New England heritage, simple ingredients, exciting category presence and expanding distribution. Their organic applesauce has long been a family favorite here in New England, and their innovative and delicious sipping vinegars make it easy to get the daily health benefits of apple cider vinegar without the vinegar taste.
“Our goal is to establish a leading premium branded specialty food platform, and we believe that Vermont Village will be a critical part of realizing that vision. By leveraging our sales and marketing expertise, product development capabilities and other corporate support functions, we will drive exceptional growth of both brands while maintaining our commitment to superior quality products. We look forward to working alongside Vermont Village to accelerate our mutual growth.”
Earlier this month, Audax Private Equity acquired a controlling interest in Stonewall Kitchen from Centre Partners. Stonewall Kitchen manufactures branded specialty food and gift products, including jams, olive oils, bottled sauces, crackers and pancake mixes. The company’s portfolio consists of the flagship Stonewall Kitchen brand; Tillen Farms pickled vegetables and cocktail cherries; Napa Valley Naturals olive oils, culinary oils, balsamic vinegars and wine vinegars; Montebello organic pasta; and the Legal Sea Foods brand of seafood, sauces and condiments. The company has more than 6,000 wholesale accounts nationwide and internationally, an online direct-to-consumer business, nine company stores in New England and a flagship campus featuring a store, cafe and cooking school in York.
