SEATTLE — Starbucks Corp. has unveiled its first new beverages for 2020, and plant-based milk alternatives star in all three.

“Customers are looking for more ways to personalize their beverages,” said Raegan Powell, product developer for Starbucks. “We love how the nuanced flavor you get with plant-based milks pairs with espresso, either hot or iced. It’s a new way to start your new year.”

The Almondmilk Honey Flat White combines shots of blonde espresso with a honey blend and steamed almond milk finished with a dot of foam.

“We started with the coffee,” Ms. Powell said. “Starbucks blonde espresso pairs well with the lighter texture of milk alternatives, especially almond milk. It’s a little bit nuttier, so it complements the almond-based milk.”

The Coconutmilk Latte blends shots of Starbucks blonde espresso with steamed coconut milk and a finishing strike of cascara sugar.

“Coconut milk is such a star on its own, we leaned into highlighting the coffee and the (coconut) milk,” Ms. Powell said. “We found that the cascara sugar on the top added a bit of sweetness without overpowering the beverage.”

Both the Almondmilk Honey Flat White and the Coconutmilk Latte will join the permanent menu in Starbucks stories in the United States and Canada.

The Oatmilk Honey Latte — which will be available in approximately 1,300 participating stores in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin — is made with Starbucks blonde espresso infused with honey blend, steamed oat milk and a sweet and savory honey topping.

“When I think about oats and winter, it’s very natural to pair honey with oats,” Ms. Powell said. “Just think of a lightly sweetened oatmeal cookie or warm bowl of oatmeal.”
