KANSAS CITY — Almonds in all formats are on the rise in new menu items, whether it be almond milk, almond marzipan or almond butter.

Starbucks is pouring the new Almondmilk Honey Flat White, combining shots of blonde espresso with a honey blend and steamed almond milk finished with a dot of foam.

“We started with the coffee,” said Raegan Powell, product developer for Starbucks. “Starbucks blonde espresso pairs well with the lighter texture of milk alternatives, especially almond milk. It’s a little bit nuttier, so it complements the almond-based milk.”

Also blending almond and honey, Baskin-Robbins is scooping a sweet and salty new ice cream flavor for the new year. Salted Almond Honeycomb Ice Cream features a honey ice cream combined with honeycomb pieces and a swirl of sweet almond marzipan.

“Almond and honey is a flavor combination that goes together beautifully in baked goods, especially in cakes,” said Jeanne Bolger, director of research and development for Baskin-Robbins. “For January’s Flavor of the Month, we wanted to give our guests the opportunity to savor this unexpected ‘flavor duo’ in a scoop of our ice cream.”

The new Hiit Fit Smoothies from Smoothie King include almonds in three different formats. The chocolate cinnamon smoothie blends cocoa with cinnamon, almond butter, bananas, dates and Califia Farms almond milk, while the veggie mango variety combines organic spinach, mangoes, almonds and bananas.

Almond butter is the star of three new smoothies at Planet Smoothie: the Muscle Up Buttercup Smoothie, Almond Berry Blast Smoothie and Almond Mocha Jolt Smoothie.

“Almond butter boasts heart healthy fats along with other great health benefits,” said Nicole Butcher, director of marketing at Kahala Brands, parent company of Planet Smoothie. “These smoothies are the perfect complement to those New Year’s resolutions, and with three different flavor profiles, we have something for everyone.”
