CAROL STREAM, ILL. – Devanco Foods has acquired exclusive rights to all patents and intellectual property for Schmacon beef bacon. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Additionally, Howard Bender, founder and inventor of Schmacon, has agreed to become the director of beef bacon products for Devanco.

“We knew Devanco had the resources to take beef bacon to the next level,” Mr. Bender said. “We had the help of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, BRANDformula’s development team and strategists, and the Certified Angus Beef L.L.C. team with global reach. It’s the support of these larger organizations that helped get us to Devanco today.”

Evan Bartzis, general manager at Devanco Foods, leads a team that has started broad global distribution of Schmacon by targeting quick-service restaurant chains, hotel groups, university food service operations and grocery chains.

“We found that most beef bacon products do not eat well,” Mr. Bartzis said. “We are going to change that reputation. Schmacon has an incredible co-branded product and relationship with the Certified Angus Beef brand and takes beef bacon to a whole new level. With great raw materials like Certified Angus Beef brand product, our beef bacon is game changing.”

Schmacon beef bacon is made from smoked and uncured whole muscle beef with a patent-pending proprietary formulation and process that results in crisping and curling similar to traditional bacon, the company said. The product is coated with spices including coriander and pepper and is glazed with turbinado sugar and tapioca dextrin. Featuring 70 calories and 6 grams of protein per 2-slice serving, the beef bacon contains approximately 80% less fat, 35% less sodium and 35% less calories than most pork bacon, according to the company.

Devanco Foods manufactures gyros, fully cooked whole muscle beef products, beef and poultry burgers and Mediterranean products for food service and retail customers. Devanco maintains a pork-free facility, and 100% of its bacon is Certified Halal.
