KANSAS CITY — While many brands are introducing single-serve, bite-size and thinner varieties of foods, some CPG manufacturers and foodservice companies are adhering to that age-old saying: bigger is better.

New oversized restaurant offerings range from burgers with four beef patties to 9-inch long tacos.

For example, Taco John’s in March launched the Boss Burrito and the Boss Bowl, each filled with more than a pound of ingredients.

“Parents these days demand quality ingredients, variety and large enough portions to get them through their busy day,” said Bob Karisny, vice president for menu strategy and innovation at Taco John’s. “We are true innovators, so we wanted to create a burrito and bowl option that are both large and full of quality ingredients and bold flavors. The Boss Burritos and Bowls are just that, and guests can get both at a more affordable price than the other guys. We’re showing everyone why Taco John’s is the boss.”

New supersized retail products include giant cereal pieces, frozen meals packed with double portions of meat and 6-inch personal pan cookies.

New Hungry-Man brand Double Meat Bowls, announced by Conagra Brands, Inc. in February, contain double portions of protein along with hearty sides. Varieties include boneless fried chicken with macaroni and cheese, angus meatloaf with cheddar grits, and chicken bacon ranch with mashed potatoes.

“This is Hungry-Man XL,” said Sean Connolly, president and chief executive officer of Conagra Brands. “These things pack a wallop. Some of them have over 45 grams of protein per serving. We think it really lives up to the promise of satisfying a hungry person.”
