WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 15,901 million lbs in January, up 1% from January 2012, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report.

Milk production for December was revised to 15,688 million lbs, up 2% from December 2011 and a decrease of 5 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate.

January production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,871 lbs, up 11 lbs from January 2012. There were 8.5 million dairy cows on farms during the month, 2,000 head less than in January 2012 but 6,000 head more than in December 2012.
