ORANGE COUNTY, CALIF. — AKA Snacks, LLC, a new plant-based snack company, is debuting with its flagship product: Palmonds.

Soy-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, paleo and vegan, Palmonds are sprouted almonds that are dehydrated and flavored with organic spices, coconut sugar and coconut aminos. Coconut aminos are created by fermenting palm tree sap with sea salt to produce a liquid seasoning packed with vitamins and essential amino acids, AKA Snacks said. The condiment is typically used as a savory alternative to soy sauce.

Palmonds provide 10 grams of plant-based protein per serving and come in four flavors: salty sweet, cinnamon sugar, sweet barbecue and spicy nacho.

The salty sweet Palmonds are made with dehydrated sprouted almonds, coconut aminos, coconut sugar, garlic powder, sea salt and onion powder. Each 1.5-oz serving contains 260 calories, 5 grams of sugar and 6 grams of fiber.

The cinnamon sugar flavor features dehydrated sprouted almonds, coconut aminos, coconut sugar and nutmeg. Each serving contains 280 calories, 9 grams of sugar and 6 grams of fiber.

The sweet barbecue offering is made with dehydrated sprouted almonds, coconut aminos, coconut sugar, chili powder, paprika, garlic powder, sea salt and onion powder. Each serving contains 270 calories, 5 grams of sugar and 7 grams of fiber.

The spicy nacho variety is dairy-free and contains dehydrated sprouted almonds, coconut aminos, nutritional yeast, onion powder and sea salt. Each serving contains 250 calories, 2 grams of sugar and 6 grams of fiber.

“These almonds are sprouted and dehydrated … not roasted,” AKA Snacks said. “Absolutely no oils are added into the products. This unique process helps to create a light crunchy texture with bold flavor without using oils or high heat roasting. Roasting kills off a lot of the macronutrients and micronutrients within the nut. Not only that, sprouting helps to unlock a lot of those nutrients and make them more readily available to our bodies for absorption. And if that wasn’t enough, sprouting can also make Palmonds more easily digestible. In fact, sprouting can make any nut more easily digestible. Nuts, grains and seeds contain a naturally occurring chemical called phytic acid. This chemical can be upsetting to our tummies. It is also Mother Nature’s way of protecting nutrients in the nuts, grains and seeds as they sit and wait to sprout, or germinate. Once the sprouting process begins, this chemical is released and the nutrients are freed.”

AKA Snacks is named for its founder and chief executive officer, Ashley Kathleen Allyn, who created the brand after being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease.

“I wanted flavor … I wanted delicious, crunchy, and satisfying snacks,” Ms. Allyn said. “I spent hours in the grocery store searching and studying the ingredients lists, trying to find foods with ingredients that wouldn't irritate my gut. When I was able to finally find something, it just didn't taste as good as I hoped it would. That's when I began making my own snacks, and AKA Snacks was born. Our mission is to bring these boldly flavored, satisfying and nutritious snacks to the world and give our customers better options for snack foods.”
