VEVEY, SWITZERLAND — Nestle SA has entered the plant-based tuna market with a new product made from six ingredients. The product initially will be launched in the company’s Garden Gourmet brand in Switzerland.

The launch will include a refrigerated product to be used in salads and other applications, and as an ingredient in prepared plant-based sandwiches.

“We are delighted to launch this strategic expansion of Nestle’s plant-based offerings in the Swiss market first,” said Eugenio Simioni, market head for Nestle Switzerland. “It is another example of the innovation strength of Nestle in Switzerland, and the exceptional capabilities and expertise we have in this country in the area of food and nutrition.”

Nestle is promoting the product’s sustainability attributes, including the reduction of overfishing of the oceans.

“Our plant-based tuna alternative is delicious, nutritious and high in protein, while also being mercury-free,” said Stefan Palzer, chief technology officer. “We are excited to launch this great product, and other plant-based fish and shellfish alternatives are already under development.”
