ATLANTA — The Coca-Cola Co. is making progress on its sustainability goals with a series of new packaging initiatives.

The company is introducing a new 13.2-oz bottle made from 100% recycled plastic materials (rPET) in the United States. The bottle will roll out across Coke, Diet Coke, Coke Zero Sugar and flavored Coca-Cola beverages in the Northeast, Florida and California beginning in February. The 13.2-oz bottle will roll out across additional sparkling beverages brands nationwide this summer.

The bottle, which marks the first-ever Coca-Cola package made from 100% rPET in the United States, was designed to offer a more convenient and sippable portion size, the company said.

“On-the-go consumers have been telling us they want an option like this, because it’s just the right amount for the ‘snacking’ occasion,” said Tammy Lee, brand manager, Coca-Cola Trademark. “We believe this innovation delivers the double benefit of convenience and sustainability.”

As part of the portfolio approach, 20-oz bottles made from 100% rPET are being introduced across Coca-Cola branded beverages in California, New York and Texas. Dasani and smartwater will follow suit, introducing 20-oz bottles made from 100% rPET in March and July, respectively.

The company also is introducing a new 13.2-oz clear bottle made from 100% rPET for Sprite. The clear package makes it easier for bottles to be recycled and made into new bottles, Coca-Cola said. The company aims to transition all Sprite bottles to clear packaging by the end of 2022.

“Given our scale and resources, we realize our unique opportunity and clear responsibility to make a positive difference in the global plastic crisis,” said Alpa Sutaria, vice president and general manager of sustainability at The Coca-Cola Co.’s North American operating unit. “Plastic is a valuable packaging resource and these innovations in the US represent meaningful action that focus not just on what goes into the bottles, but on innovation of the bottles themselves.”

The new initiatives will be paired with the company’s largest on-packaging messaging effort to date. Each 100% rPET package will feature on cap messaging as well as a “Recycle Me Again” message on the label. The innovations will reduce the company’s plastic use across its North American portfolio by more than 20% compared to 2018 and will reduce approximately 10,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States annually, Coca-Cola said.
