LOS ANGELES — A Los-Angeles based startup is using sound waves to shake up the $605 billion global snack market

Sound Nutrition’s flagship product, Sound Bites, are oval-shaped snacks made with premium-quality ingredients and a patented process that uses high-frequency, low-amplitude sound waves to preserve nutrients, develop flavor and create a signature texture. The ultrasonic technology works by gently vibrating ingredients, including whole egg crystals and cacao into a discrete shape in just a fraction of a second. The process cooks and forms food without applying heat, which preserves the nutritional integrity of the snack.

The sound waves also develop the unique flavor of Sound Bites and create a rich, buttery mouthfeel that melts away with a clean finish.

The snacks are available in vanilla lime, mocha, chocolate raspberry and coconut surprise varieties, each with varying levels of moistness, density and chewiness. The vanilla lime variety offers a flavor similar to cheesecake with a smooth, airy texture and mouthfeel. The mocha variety offers a bitter, rich and sweet flavor with a moderately dense body, smooth chew and long finish. The chocolate raspberry variety offers a sweet and tart flavor with a smooth, clean mouthfeel. The coconut surprise variety offers a nutty, mildly sweet flavor with a fluffy, chewy bite.

“As we set out to develop our Sound Bites, we really started from scratch by asking ourselves, ‘How can we use this incredible technology to create a completely new segment in the snacking category?’” said Don Dillon, founder and chief executive officer of Sound Nutrition. “Similarly, we are encouraging consumers to stop and ask themselves that same question — ‘How can snacks impact my life?’ We have built Sound Bites on a more purposeful approach to snacking, one that not only satisfies hunger and tastes good, but also tunes the mind, body and soul.”

Offering a marked departure from a traditional bar or mix, Sound Nutrition encourages consumers to redefine the role of snacking in their lives, he added. The snack bites provide a balanced ratio of nutritional ingredients that satisfies hunger between meals and creates a feel-good, post-consumption experience around consumers’ physical and mental wellness. The snacks provide satiation without feeling overly full or lethargic and offer mental clarity and sustained energy conductive to more active lifestyles.

“When it comes to snacking, there is typically a compromise regarding nutrition and great taste,” Mr. Dillon said. “At Sound, we believe that healthy eating and enjoyable snacking can be one and the same. Sound Bites embody a transformative experience, made possible through a premium, clean snack that helps the difference-makers of the world live their lives to the fullest — today and in the future.”

The snacks are available direct-to-consumer through the company’s e-commerce platform. Sound Bites contain two oval-shaped bites per pack, and each pack is available in a case of 12 priced at $72. A $24 sample pack called the Sampler EP includes four Sound Bites packs featuring one of each flavor.
