WASHINGTON — The preliminary national average price received by farmers for all wheat in August was $8.03 per bu, up 10c from $7.93 in July and up 44c from $7.59 in August 2011, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Agricultural Prices report.

The average price paid for winter wheat in August was $7.96 per bu, up 17c from $7.79 in July and up 69c from $7.27 in August 2011. The average price paid for durum was $7.41 per bu in August, down $1.19 from $8.60 in July and down $2.79 from $10.20 in August 2011. Spring wheat other than durum averaged $8.32 a bu, down 21c from $8.53 in July but up 4c from $8.28 in August 2011.


The average price paid for all rice was $14.50 a cwt, up 30c from $14.20 in July and up 90c from $13.60 in August 2011.

The August index of prices received by farmers for food grains was 263 compared with the 1990-1992 base of 100, unchanged from July’s downwardly revised index but up 6% from 248 in August 2011.

The August index of feed grains was 311, up 6% from 294 in July and up 10% from 283 in August 2011.

The average price paid to farmers for corn was $7.54 a bu, up 40c from $7.14 in July and up 66c from $6.88 in August 2011. Farmers received an average of $11.90 a cwt for grain sorghum in August, up $1.20 from $10.70 in July and in August 2011. The average price paid for oats in August was $3.64 a bu, down 6c from $3.70 in July but up 44c from $3.20 in August 2011.

The index of August prices received for oilseeds was 282, up 3% from 275 in July and up 18% from 239 in August 2011.

Farmers received an average of $15.90 a bu for soybeans in August, up 50c from $15.40 in July and up $2.50 from $13.40 in August 2011.

The August index for dairy products was 136, up 5% from 129 in July but down 20% from 169 in August 2011. The average price paid for all milk in August was $17.80 a cwt, up 90c from $16.90 in July but down $4.30 from $22.10 in August 2011.

The August poultry and egg index was 163, up 3% from 159 in July and up 2% from 160 in August 2011. The average price paid to farmers for all eggs in August was $1.13 a dozen, up 16c from 97c in July but down 1c from $1.14 in August 2011.
