BERLIN — Following its first financing round, Berlin-based food technology startup Perfeggt is set to debut its plant-based liquid egg alternative in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, with expansion in additional markets planned for the coming months. Perfeggt has raised more than $2.8 million with backing from EVIG Group, Stray Dog Capital, E²JDJ, Tet

Ventures, Good Seed Ventures, Sustainable Food Ventures and Shio Capital.

“With Perfeggt, we are offering a real alternative for one of the most popular animal proteins in the world,” said Tanja Bogumil, co-founder and chief executive officer of Perfeggt. “We’re more than convinced that it’s about time to rethink the egg as part of our daily diet with plant-based proteins and data-driven technology.”

Perfeggt’s egg alternative is formulated with fava bean protein and may be fried in a pan like an omelet or scrambled eggs, according to the company. Chief product officer Bernd Becker, who for more than two decades led research and development at a leading German vegetarian and vegan foods company, said the team is “laser-focused on matching the right plant-based proteins and lipids that allow us to replicate the exceedingly complex multifunctional and versatile characteristics of an egg and its indistinguishable taste.”

Compared to meat and dairy alternatives, the market for alternatives eggs remains relatively untapped, according to the company, citing a significant growth opportunity with 1.3 trillion eggs consumed annually and 110 billion eggs eaten in Europe each year. Participants in Perfeggt’s funding round included early backers of prominent plant-based companies, including Beyond Meat and Gathered Foods, the maker of Good Catch.

“We are delighted to support Perfeggt,” said Stephanie Dorsey, founding partner at E²JDJ. “We are incredibly impressed by the team’s rapid technological progress in developing next-generation alternative proteins and finding solutions that improve human, planetary and animal health. The egg market is a massive opportunity, and this is just the beginning.”
