WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 16,440 million lbs in March, down slightly from 16,462 million lbs in March 2012, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report.

Milk production for February was revised to 14,653 million lbs, down 3.3% from February 2012 and an increase of 15 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate. When adjusted for the leap year in 2012, February production was slightly above the year-ago level.

The U.S.D.A. said it did not provide data for milk-per-cow or number of cows due to budget constraints related to sequestration.
