PLEASANTON, CALIF. — Robert Edwards will become the next chief executive officer of Safeway, Inc. when Steven Burd retires in May, the company announced.

Mr. Edwards is currently president of the chain and has been with the company since 2004. He was previously a senior executive with Maxtor Corp., Imation Corp. and Santa Fe Pacific Corp.
