WASHINGTON — Commercial red meat production in the United States in June 2013 totaled 3,864 million lbs, down 7% from May and down 4% from June 2012, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Livestock Slaughter report.

Pork production was 1,677 million lbs, down 12% from May and down 4% from June 2012. Commercial hog slaughter totaled 8.2 million head, down 4% from the previous June. The average live weight of slaughter hogs was 274 lbs, unchanged from June 2012.

June beef production was 2,166 million lbs, down 3% from May and down 4% from June 2012. Cattle slaughter totaled 2.73 million head, down 5% from June 2012. The average live weight of cattle at slaughter was 1,307 lbs, up 17 lbs from June 2012.

Veal production was 8.5 million lbs, down 7% from May and down 5% from June 2012. The average live weight of calves at slaughter was 250 lbs, down 20 lbs from the previous year.
