KANSAS CITY — Co-branded product “mashups” allow consumers to be adventurous with new flavors while remaining comfortable with trusted brands. Manufacturers are tapping into these desires by blending the familiar with the new across many different categories and formats.

Mondelez International, Inc. and ice cream maker Froneri, for example, developed a line of frozen Oreo dairy products. Offerings include bars, cones, sandwiches, miniature ice cream bites, and 14-oz and 48-oz varieties of ice cream, with Oreo and mint Oreo flavors.

“Brands are trying to push out a little bit, move into new spaces, new adjacencies and maybe completely new parts of the store,” said Joan Driggs, vice president of content and thought leadership at Chicago-based Circana. “Co-branding is a great way to do that. The Oreo brand is a perfect example. The Oreo cookie has been in ice cream toppings and breakfast cereals. Oreo now has its own line, through Froneri, of frozen novelties and ice cream products. So, it’s new spaces, new occasions, new ways of extending the brand for maybe new audiences. It’s a great way of leveraging the trust that consumers already have in a lot of these brands.”

Kellanova and condiment brand Mike’s Hot Honey unveiled a limited-edition Club Crisps cracker flavor. Club Crisps flavored with Mike’s Hot Honey is aimed at consumers interested in the “swicy” flavor trend and joins the existing Club Crisps lineup of sea salt, ranch, sour cream and onion and sweet and salty flavors.

“We’re always eager to learn what our fans’ new flavor obsessions are so that we can create a fun and unique snacking experience,” said Carrie Foose, director of brand marketing for Kellanova Crackers. “Working with Mike’s Hot Honey to create this sweet and spicy new crisp for the ever-growing spicy snacker segment is an exciting first-of-its-kind innovation for Club Crisps.”

The Talking Rain Beverage Co. brand Sparkling Ice partnered with Mars, Inc. to create Sparkling Ice Starburst. The beverage collaboration merges Sparkling Ice’s carbonated water line with Starburst-inspired flavors in a zero-sugar format. The product is formulated to replicate the “creamy, candy mouthfeel” and sensory experiences of eating a Starburst candy, according to the company. Flavors include cherry, orange, lemon and strawberry.
