SAN FRANCISCO — Nectar, a publisher of plant-based meat sensory analysis to accelerate the alternative protein transition through large-scale sensory testing that launched in June 2024, has acquired the data assets of Taste Like’s online platform for discovering alternative protein products, according to the company. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
“Combined with Nectar’s sensory data, we know that the Taste Like nutritional and ingredient data will help us accelerate innovation and enable data-driven research for years to come,” said Caroline Cotto, director of Nectar.
Taste Like, founded by a team of women in 2021, offers a consumer packaged goods directory of animal-free food products. The directory features ingredient, nutrition and allergen meta-data for approximately 1,200 plant-based and fermentation products from approximately 147 companies, according to Taste Like.
Taste Like said its platform highlights nutrition information by serving size and has more than 200 unique ingredient tags to improve data quality to allow for more aggregation and scanning.
By acquiring Taste Like’s data, Nectar said the combined data sets may be used for machine learning and AI-training applications that will offer predictive analytics and drive innovation in the alternative protein product development sector, according to the company.
Nectar said it is planning to expand into new alternative protein categories and cheeses in 2025.Enjoying this content? Learn about more disruptive startups on the Food Entrepreneur page.
